Cargo Movement from India’s Northeastern Region to Kolkata via Bangladesh to Commence Soon

Regular cargo movement from India’s northeastern region to the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) in Kolkata, India, through Bangladesh is set to commence soon.

According to Mr. Samrat Rahi, SMP deputy chairman (Kolkata), India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is already in talks with the Customs authorities and the Ministry of External Affairs to enable SMP to start regular operations to India’s northeastern region through Bangladesh. "

An agreement between Bangladesh and India allows multi-modal transit or transshipment of goods on eight routes. Goods arriving from India at Chittagong and Mongla ports can be sent through the following routes: (i) Agartala via Akhaura in Bangladesh, (ii) Dawki in Meghalaya via Tamabil in Sylhet, (iii) Sutarkandi in Assam via Sheola, and (iv) Srimantapur in Tripura via Bibir Bazar in Comilla, and vice versa.
