Trincomalee Port to be Developed into Export Hub

29 January 2019

Development of Trincomalee harbor into a highly competitive port is a key pillar of the Government of Sri Lanka’s export strategy, noted Mr. Sagala Ratnayaka, Ports, Shipping, and Southern Development Minister, Government of Sri Lanka.

Trincomalee was earmarked as a potential export hub. Plans by the Government to boost its facilities for 24/7 operation and increase the volume of cargo it handles, including from general cargo ships are underway. By April 2019, Trincomalee harbor will be equipped with night navigation, financed by a JPY 1 billion (around $8.95 million) grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. New radar systems will also be introduced.

The available water and land area of the Trincomalee harbor is about 10 times as much as the Port of Colombo. Trincomalee was tentatively identified to cater for bulk and break bulk cargo, and port-related industrial activities, including heavy industries, tourism, and agriculture, according to the Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) website. At present, SLPA is in the process of re-developing Trincomalee into a metropolis growth center.
Galle harbor, a natural harbor in Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast, will also be equipped with night navigation by end of 2019. The Government is also exploring the potential of Galle harbor for tourism.
