SASEC Microhydro Project Nears Completion in Nepal

22 October 2018

The Simrutu River Small Hydropower Project, a micro-hydropower plant developed under the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Program, is nearing completion in Rukum District, Nepal. The power plant will produce 200 kilowatts of electricity for rural communities and will be the largest hydropower project in the district upon completion.

Water from the Simrutu River and the Khar River will be channeled to rotate the turbines for the power plant. Once fully operational, the hydropower plant will distribute electricity to an estimated 1,296 rural households in Rukum District.

The project is administered by Nepal’s Alternative Energy Promotion Center. The Asian Development Bank is financing NPR 57 million (USD 487,300) of the total investment of NPR 87.1 million (USD 744,600) for the project.

The project aims to increase access to electricity in rural areas and increase the share of renewable energy for Nepal.
