Sri Lanka Finalizes National Export Strategy, Appoints Advisory Committees

The National Export Strategy (NES) of the Government of Sri Lanka has been finalized by the Export Development Board (EDB) and is ready for submission to the Cabinet. The strategy aims to boost the performance of the country's focus sectors—information technology, wellness tourism, spice concentrates, boat making, processed food and beverages, and electronic and electical components. It also aims to improve the business environment in the country by developing trade support functions in logistics, trade information and promotion, and national quality infrastructure.

In preparation for implementation of the NES, the EDB appointed Advisory Committees. Its functions are to

  • Identify priority issues and opportunities that will help improve the performance of Sri Lankan exports;
  • Set goals to strengthen sector competitiveness;
  • Identify market requirements, and propose key policy changes needed to initiate the development of the sector;
  • Provide a key platform to inform advisors, policy makers, national institutions, and other relevant stakeholders about programs and reforms required to boost specific industries, while maintaining growth of the export sector; and
  • Analyze export-related policies and programs to eliminate gaps and overlaps that hinder the natural growth of the sector.

Public and private sector industry representatives and leaders, and potential exporters comprise the advisory committees. These committees will support the economic development through a high level trade governance council headed by the President or the Prime Minister.

An secretariat has also been proposed to fast-track implementation of the NES. It will coordinate with the EDB advisory committees and provide assistance to responsible line ministries.
