Nepal Upgrades Hydropower Plant with India’s Help

11 January 2017

Nepal has upgraded the Thame Khola Small Hydropower Plant in Namche VDC, Solukhumbu District, raising the plant’s capacity from 630 kilowatts (kW) to 930 kW. The project aims to mitigate Nepal’s energy shortage by adding 300 kW to the power plant and is expected to improve the economic prospects of the local community.

India provided assistance of Rs 44 million ($54,500) for the upgrade.

The facility is operated by the Khumbu Bijuli Company and supplies power to the upper Khumbu valley, including 18 villages of Khumjung and Namche VDC. Around 5,000 residents are now expected to receive a continuous supply of electricity.

Mr. Ranjit Rae, Indian ambassador to Nepal, inaugurated the power plant on 8 January 2017. A news release from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu described the project as symbolic of India’s determination to cooperate with Nepal to help the country achieve energy security through energy trade and the development of hydropower plants and cross-border transmission lines.
