Power Market Workshop in Bangladesh Explores Further Energy Imports from India

Bangladesh plans to import 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from India in the coming years, according to Bangladesh State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) Nasrul Hamid in his address at the 'Power Market Development in India: Key Lessons Learnt' workshop held on 21 April 2016 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He highlighted the country's ongoing regional power trade with India and plans for its expansion, and urged the Government of India to step forward in the planned hydropower project with Bhutan, which will contribute in the Government of Bangladesh's target to achieve generation capacity of 24,000 MW under ‘Vision 2021’ through fuel diversification, renewable energy technology implementation and reviewing the Power System Master Plan.

Speakers including Mr. Monowar Islam, Secretary, Power Division, MPEMR; Dr. Jyoti Parikh, Executive Director, Integrated Research and Action for Development; and Dr. Karl Wurster Deputy Director, Economic Growth Office, United States Agency for International Development, who emphasized the need to increase regional power trade among South Asian countries and harness the region's hydropower potential. Mr. Islam shared findings on the region's energy security and per capita electricity consumption of each of the South Asian countries, calling for action to improve the scenario. He also discussed Bangladesh's plan to invest in Bhutan's hydropower sector.
