Training Institute Prepares to Meet Bhutan's Human Resource Needs in Hydropower

15 April 2016

The Jigme Wangchuck Power Training Institute in Gelephu, Bhutan is preparing to meet the human resource requirements of the country’s hydropower sector in the next four years. According to estimates by the Druk Green Power Corporation and Bhutan Power Corporation, the country’s hydropower sector will need at least 6,500 people to achieve its vision of generating 10,000 megawatts by 2020.

A large number of jobs will continuously open for construction, operations and maintenance of Bhutan’s four ongoing hydropower projects. The demand will increase further as other planned hydropower projects are implemented.

Labor Minister Ngeema Sangay Tshempo shared during the Institute’s consecration ceremony that the country aims to close the current gap in labor demand—which is being supplemented by hiring foreign workers—through skills development and training.

In addition to hydropower, attendees of the Jigme Wangchuck Power Training Institute will also be trained on wind, solar, and biogas technologies.

The Institute was funded by the Government of India. India Deputy Chief of Mission to Bhutan Bishwadip Dey and Counselor Sheri Subrata Das were also present at the consecration ceremony.
