Energy Secretaries of India and Nepal Discuss Implementation of PTA

A 2-day meeting of the Joint Working Committee and Joint Steering Committee on India-Nepal Cooperation in the Power Sector held in Kathmandu, Nepal on 27-28 January 2016 discussed the implementation of the power trade agreement signed in September 2014. The India-Nepal power trade agreement allows the trade of energy, offering Nepal a means to reduce its growing trade deficit by exporting power from India, and reducing the import of petroleum products.

The Meeting

  • Agreed that India will supply Nepal with 300 megawatt of electricity in the next 18 months, beginning with 80 MW energy from February 2016; 
  • Discussed the need to increase capacity of the substation in Dhalkebar to enable import of additional power, and to expedite construction of cross-border transmission lines and power grids, including the 132 kilovolt Kataiya-Kushwaha and Raxaul-Parwanipur transmission lines which will allow additional 100 MW of electricity from India; and
  • Reviewed plans for long-term energy trade, including the proposed 6 cross-border power corridors on Attariya-Uttarakhand, Lamki-Tikuniya, Kohalpur-Rupaidiha, Butwal-Gorakhpur, Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar and Inaruwa-Bihar.

The Meeting was co-chaired by India Power Secretary Pradip Kumar Pujari and Nepal Energy Secretary Suman Prasad Sharma.
