SASEC Region Trade Integration Indicators Updated

The intra-regional trade share among members of South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) increased during 2011–2013, as economic exchange within the region strengthened, although overall intra-Asia trade declined. SASEC intra-regional trade also increased during January-July 2014 compared to the same period in 2013, yet its trade with the world decreased.

Meanwhile, India’s intra-regional trade is growing, appreciating by 29% among SASEC countries while its trade with the world decreased by 4.2%. Comparatively, trade within the region increased for Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. There is also a notable 17% increase in Bangladesh’s trade with the world as the country opens up to new markets.
