Fully Commissioned: Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project

27 August 2025

The sixth and final unit of the Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project was successfully synchronized with Bhutan’s national grid on 27 August 2025, adding 170 megawatts and bringing the 1,020 MW project to full operational capacity. As one of the largest and most significant joint hydropower ventures between Bhutan and India, the project stands as a testament to the strong partnership between Bhutan and India in renewable energy development.

A commissioning ceremony was held in Wangdue. Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Indian Ambassador to Bhutan Sudhakar Dalela jointly inaugurated the final unit. Initiated in December 2010, the Punatsangchhu-II project is a run-of-the-river hydropower facility, financed through 30% grant funding and 70% loan assistance from the Government of India. Earlier phases of the project were commissioned in stages: the first and second units in December 2024, the third unit in March 2025, the fourth in May 2025, and the fifth in July 2025.
