Bangladesh Approves Proposal to Import 40MW Electricity from Nepal
11 June 2024

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase in Bangladesh has approved a proposal to import 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal. This marks a significant step in energy cooperation between the two countries. This decision was made during a meeting on 11 June 2024, where the proposal was presented by the Power Division of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). The approval was part of 15 proposals endorsed by the committee, chaired by Mr. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, Finance Minister of the Government of Bangladesh.
A tripartite agreement involving the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN) of India, and the BPDB would facilitate the electricity import, according to reports. The agreement is set for a five-year term, with the power to be traded at approximately 8.17 Bangladeshi Taka (about Rs9.30 and $0.11) per unit. The power will be delivered at the 400kV substation at Muzaffarpur in India. Bangladesh will be responsible for paying the transmission charges for using Indian infrastructure.
