Road Work for SASEC Dhaka-Sylhet Highway to Begin in December

17 November 2022

Road expansion work South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Investment Project is set to begin in December 2022. Work to expand the highway from two to six lanes aims to reduce travel time and improve road safety.

"The existing two-lane highway is not fulfilling the growing demand for traffic on the highway," said Mr. AK Mohammad Fazlul Karim, project director for the road development project. Dhaka-Sylhet Highway, explained Mr. Karim, is one of the SASEC and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) corridors. It is also part of Asian Highway (AH1) and the Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal (BBIN) initiative.

The Dhaka-Sylhet Highway, which is over 200 kilometers long, will connect Meghalaya (India) with West Bengal (India) by way of the Tamabil-Sylhet-Dhaka-Narail-Jashore road. Economic zones are being set up in Sylhet and nearby areas and the area could also be developed as a tourist destination.

The Bangladesh Highways Department entered a joint venture contract on 24 October 2022 with Zhengzhou City Highway Engineering Corporation of the People's Republic of China and Bangladeshi Max Infrastructure to widen an 18-kilometer stretch of road from the Kanchpur intersection to Chanpara. Project cost under the contract is BDT925.36 crore (approximately $89.67 million). A 17-kilometer stretch of road from Chanpara to Narsingdi BSCIC will also be widened under the joint venture for BDT1,394.66 crore (approximately $134.40 million). Construction work is set to be completed in four years. The project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank.
