Bangladesh, India Review Power Cooperation in the Subregion

The 19th Joint Steering Committee (JSC) meeting on Bangladesh-India cooperation in the power sector held on 23 January 2021 at Dhaka, Bangladesh reviewed the status of power trade between the two countries, as well as energy trade involving Nepal and Bhutan. Mr. Md. Habibur Rahman, Secretary, Power Division Government of Republic of Bangladesh, and Mr. Sanjiv Nandan Sahai, Secretary, Power, Government of India headed the country delegations.
According to the news release by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, the JSC reviewed the progress of implementation of decisions taken since the last meeting in March 2020. It took note of the status of 1320 MW Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, Rampal and discussed power trade between India and Bangladesh through various interconnections.
A report by UNB noted that among the items reviewed were the construction of the second transmission line, Indian power import-export regulations, and the status of import of electricity through India from the GMR hydropower plant in Nepal and the joint investment by Bangladesh, India, and Bhutan in Bhutan’s hydropower sector.
