Bangladesh, India to Upgrade the Ashuganj-Akhaura road
23 January 2020
The Governments of Bangladesh and India signed an agreement to upgrade the 50.58-kilometer long road between Ashuganj river port and the Akhaura land port in Bangladesh into a four-lane highway on 23 January 2020. The Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department and Afcons Infrastructure Limited of India will upgrade the road between the Ashuganj river port to Dharhar (India). The Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department will develop the remaining section from Dharhar to Akhaura in Chattogram, Bangladesh with an India-Bangladesh joint venture firm.
The project will be developed under the $2 billion line of credit extended by India to Bangladesh in 2016. Completion of the project will further promote international trade, boosting connectivity between India’s northeastern region and Bangladesh, and between South Asian and Southeast Asian countries.
