South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Road Connectivity Project

6 March 2023

The Joydevpur-Elenga-Hatkumrul-Rangpur-Burimari-Banglabandha road is helping strengthen trade in Bangladesh and foster cooperation in the South Asian subregion. The video below discusses how road reduces travel time in Bangladesh, improves the efficiency of transport, and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a major component in the country's strategy for addressing climate change. The road also connects Chattogram port with Bhutan, India, and Nepal.

The road was constructed under the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Road Connectivity (SASEC) Project and is part of SASEC Corridor 4. The project, committed in 2013, is being undertaken with support from the Asian Develop Bank. The Joydevpur-Elenga section was completed in 2022, while improvement work on the Elenga–Rangpur Road is ongoing.

Road development incorporated toilets and other facilities for commuters and pedestrians. It promotes safe mobility by including walkways and separate lanes for slow-moving vehicles.

The road benefits local communities by improving safety and convenience for schoolchildren. It also increases productivity for small businesses and industries by making it faster and less costly to transport finished goods and raw materials.
